*John Wilkes (1725 - 97

Through his marriage to the heiress Mary Meade, Wilkes came into a fortune and an estate in Buckinghamshire, and was elected High Sheriff of the county. Seeking a parliamentary career he was eventually elected as MP for Aylesbury in 1757. Despite a reputation as a rake and libertine, indeed he was a member of the notorious Hellfire Club, he was instrumental in the publishing of verbatim accounts of parliamentary debates, and in parliamentary reform.
